Most yard trees that struggle in summer aren’t getting too little water in total. They’re getting it wrong: a quick spray at the trunk that never reaches the roots that matter. A soaker hose laid in the right spot fixes that for about $20.

Where tree roots actually are
Picture a tree’s root system and most people imagine a mirror of the canopy going deep. Reality: the absorbing roots, the ones that drink, sit in the top 12 to 18 inches of soil and spread horizontally, often one and a half to two times the width of the branches.
Two practical rules follow:
- Water the drip line (the ring under the outer edge of the canopy) and beyond, not the trunk.
- Water slowly and deeply, so moisture soaks down through that whole top foot of soil.
A soaker hose does both by default. It weeps about half a gallon to a gallon per foot per hour at low pressure, which is slow enough for even clay soil to absorb.
Setting up for a young tree (years 1-3)
New trees have a root ball barely wider than the planting hole. They’re the most vulnerable and the easiest to water well:
- Coil the hose in a spiral starting about 6 inches from the trunk, out to just past the drip line. Usually 25 feet of hose does it.
- Cover with 2 to 3 inches of mulch, keeping mulch a few inches off the bark.
- Run it 45 to 60 minutes twice a week in the growing season, three times in heat waves.
The common extension rule of thumb: a new tree wants roughly 10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter per week, split into one or two deep sessions. Measure the trunk 6 inches above the ground.
Setting up for a mature tree
A big established tree under normal rainfall rarely needs you. In drought (two-plus weeks without an inch of rain), it does, and the stakes are higher: drought-stressed mature trees become targets for borers and disease, and a dead 60-foot oak is an expensive problem.
- Lay the hose in a ring at the drip line, or snake it back and forth across the root zone. A 50 to 100-foot hose covers a meaningful share of it; you can’t water every root and you don’t need to.
- Run it long: 2 to 4 hours, or move it to a new position halfway through. You want moisture 12 to 18 inches down.
- Repeat every 2 to 4 weeks while the drought lasts.

Adjust for soil: sandy soil wants shorter, more frequent sessions; clay wants long, slow, infrequent ones. The universal check is digging down 6 inches the day after watering. Moist like a wrung sponge is the goal.
Mistakes to avoid
Watering at the trunk. The bark stays wet, rot and rodents follow, and the absorbing roots at the drip line stay dry.
Frequent shallow sprinkles. Roots grow toward the surface, then cook in the next heat wave. Deep sessions build deep roots.

Watering a stressed tree without checking drainage. If the ground is already soggy, more water kills faster than drought. Root rot symptoms (wilting, yellowing) look deceptively like thirst.
A note on fruit trees
